Amidst the excitement of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, many are seeking to learn more about China and its culture. Olivet College of Art & Design is working with the international student community, especially Chinese students, to learn more about how designs used at the Olympic Games are influenced from Chinese history, tradition, and culture.
Ting-ting Ji, a senior student studying online at OCAD from Beijing, is leading a student research group exploring connected themes in designs for Olympic logos, symbols, and architecture. The team is developing a variety of resources of their experiences, including photos, blogs, drawings, and video entries. These will be compiled in a website, along with analysis of the designs and methods of visual communication.
"Our goal is to provide deeper insight into why a certain image was used in a given logo, or why these colors were used for this event. We want to look past that and learn the reason behind the designs we see at the Olympic games," said Ting-ting.
The project will last 3 months, culminating with a completed website designed by the team.
