Special Learning Opportunity for Journalism Students at Christmas

December 28, 2006

As churches and Christian organizations joyfully celebrated the Christmas, students at the Olivet College of Journalism have helped spread this "good news" of the birth of Jesus.

The Olivet College of Journalism has offered a special learning opportunity for students at Christmas. Current students from all over the world were assigned to join the local branches of the industry affiliates to participate in some on-site reporting for Christmas events. The aim is to allow them to apply the knowledge they have learnt from textbooks and to gain hands-on experiences related to their fields, which is a very important step towards professionalism.

"Now I truly come to know the life of a reporter. While many are enjoying the holiday at the special seasons, reporters are always at the frontline to serve everyone by providing timely news. Everyone in the society is drawn closer together as each of us is able to know others' life," said Dorcas, an undergraduate of Journalism from Malaysia.

Students have also taken the chance to work with churches, Christian or social organizations, showing their concern for the local community. As a Christian journalist, not only students should be trained to develop a global viewpoint, but they are also reminded that they must act locally first together with the body of Christ to make a difference in the world.

"It is an amazing experience that I am actually working with Christians and non-Christians outside of our university," shared another student from San Francisco, who prefers to remain anonymous.

In the coming year, more similar programs will be introduced. The Olivet College of Journalism is committed to raise the quality of education by stimulating our students with more diverse exposures.
