Olivet University Begins 2026–2027 Academic Year with Convocation in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, MO — Olivet University held its 2026–2027 Convocation on September 18 in St. Louis, MO, bringing together students, faculty, university leaders, and special guests to welcome the new academic year. The ceremony was the first Convocation held in St. Louis since Olivet University relocated its main campus to Missouri, making it a meaningful occasion for the university community.

Following Olivet’s tradition, the Convocation provided an opportunity for the university community to gather in worship, prayer, fellowship, and reflection while dedicating the new academic year to God. The program featured university leaders, faculty members, a Missouri state senator, special guests, and a student representative.

Dr. Jonathan Park, President of Olivet University, served as Master of Ceremonies and welcomed attendees to the Convocation, as the university opened a new chapter in its history.

The ceremony opened with a processional of faculty and administrative leaders, followed by an opening song led by Dr. Lee, singing “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” Dr. Merril Smoak, faculty member of the Zinzendorf School of Doctoral Studies, offered the invocation prayer.

The Olivet University choir performed “Total Praise” by Richard Smallwood, arranged by Joel Raney.

A special part of the ceremony was a welcome remark from Senator Brian Williams, who represents the district where Olivet University is located. His participation was a meaningful part of the university's first Convocation in St. Louis since establishing Missouri as its home state.

The Convocation Address was delivered by Dr. Joseph Ray Tallman, faculty member of the Zinzendorf School of Doctoral Studies. In his address, Dr. Tallman encouraged students to seek wisdom from God and to let the light of Jesus shine. His message encouraged students and faculty as they begin another year of academic study and spiritual growth.

Several guests also offered congratulatory remarks, including Dr. Nathanael Tran, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Rev. David Chang, President of the World Olivet Assembly, and Rev. Mark Spisak, General Secretary of the Olivet Assembly U.S.A. Several guests sent congratulatory remarks in video, including Rev. Dr. Anton Tarigan of the Asia Evangelical Alliance.

A Master of Divinity student, Vashni Boamah, also welcomed the students and offered insightful stories and words of encouragement.

The Convocation concluded with a closing song, singing “Christ for the Whole Wide Word,” followed by a benediction from Dr. Donald Tinder, Dean of Zinzendorf School of Doctoral Studies.

As the 2026–2027 academic year begins, Olivet University is grateful to continue its educational mission from Missouri and to build relationships with the St. Louis community. With students and faculty gathered for the new academic year, the university looks forward to another year of learning, fellowship, ministry preparation, and service.
