University and Community Neighbors Connect for Local Agriculture Event

February 04, 2025

Olivet University representatives attended a local tree grafting event hosted by Knöppelåsen, a newly established nonprofit dedicated to promoting regenerative agriculture, permaculture, and the restoration of native plant life in chaparral and desert regions.

The event brought together community neighbors for hands-on learning, engaging demonstrations, and networking with fellow gardening enthusiasts. Isabel Barkman, a seasoned SoCal gardening expert and longtime member of the California Rare Fruit Growers Association, and Ricardo Ortiz, owner of the award-winning Ricardo’s Nursery in Long Beach, served as the main speakers.

Participants had the opportunity to try grafting techniques under expert guidance, learn tree maintenance best practices, and exchange tips on raising chickens and farm management strategies. A shared lunch provided time for deeper discussions and community bonding.

University professor Dr. Joanna Zhang shared her reflections on the experience, emphasizing the value of the hands-on workshop:

"Although I have a master’s degree in agriculture, I actually have limited practical experience. Today’s event was truly valuable. I learned so much from Isabel and Ricardo’s detailed demonstrations. Many people shared insights about raising chickens, preventing gophers, and even preserving eggs using a method called ‘glass eggs.’ The event showcased the deep agricultural knowledge and generosity present within the community,” shared Dr. Zhang.

Dr. Zhang expressed her gratitude to event organizers, praising their dedication to helping the community succeed in sustainable farming efforts.
