OCJ Doubles Web Conference-Equipped Classrooms

March 11, 2009

Olivet College of Journalism (OCJ) has doubled the number of classrooms equipped with web-conferencing software this semester. The use of web conferencing software and other technology tools is part of a University-wide effort to promote greater professor-student interaction.

"We are constantly pursuing new ways to educate students more effectively” said Katherine Phan, Olivet College of Journalism program director. “Many times this has meant finding technology solutions to respond to the needs of students.”

The web conferencing software system allows professors to conduct office hours, discussions, and portions of their lectures on a given week’s topic through the web. During virtual office hours, students are able to ask questions and engage professors in discussions.

Outside of the classroom, students are also able to use the software to interact with classmates for group study and projects. The software also features file sharing and archiving capabilities.

Together with Olivet’s e-portfolio system, web conferencing is playing a strong role in giving students the opportunity to enhance their learning in a digital environment, said Phan.
