Jubilee College of Music Enriches Student Experiences with New Electives

September 29, 2007

In the latest stage of efforts to broaden and enhance the university curriculum, this fall Jubilee College of Music introduced electives in guitar instruction open to all majors. The new electives have been developed with attention to students outside of Jubilee College of Music who seek to integrate music into their academic experience. The popularity of the music electives is the latest evidence of community support for the school’s promotion of a more integrated, interdisciplinary curricular model.

“There are countless connections between design and music from a Christian perspective,” said Olivet College of Art & Design student Judith Vargas.  “Class Guitar is giving me a way to know God and make him known, this time through an aural art.

Class Guitar (MT520), which focuses on techniques and literature for the steel-string acoustic guitar, is mainly an ornamental techniques class with “something for everyone,” according to course facilitator Emily Ko.

Class Guitar MT520 is a cross-listed course for undergraduate and graduate students that began September 22 this semester.

“I’m pleased by the level of interest in this and other JCM course offerings,” Ko said. “I think we will see more interest in JCM electives as people discover the multiple intersections between academic fields at Olivet in service of Jesus Christ and his Kingdom.”
