Jubilee College of Music Features Student Podcast Project

December 16, 2006

In what is hoped will be a major step towards establishing a student-run radio station at Olivet University , the Jubilee College of Music will broadcast the first radio drama produced by students at the University's downtown San Francisco campus this week. The radio drama, which explores themes of evangelism, is the final project of students in the Jubilee College of Music (JCM) course "Broadcasting-Podcasting" instructed by Worship Technology professor Dr. Don Fugate.

"Broadcasting-Podcasting" teaches about the art of "podcasting," (Personal On-Demand narrowcasting) – a term used to describe both the content a processes of broadcasting multimedia files over the Internet for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The radio drama demonstrates how JCM students are pushing the boundaries of podcasting technology beyond the borders of entertainment to explore the areas of worship, prayer, scriptural study, and Christian living reaching numerous thirsty souls with the Gospel.

"The potential for outreach is tremendous," says Sarka, a 3rd-year JCM student.  "As Christians we plant many seeds of the Gospel that we never have the opportunity to see bloom. Yet when you hear later how they have grown, it's such an amazing moment.  I feel that way about podcasting – especially this final project. We are able to make our content available to anyone in the world who is listening, so there's even more opportunities to sow seeds of the Gospel. And even though we can't see it now, and I look forward to the fruit of many changed lives."

"The work in this course is a reflection of our school's desire to utilize technology for the establishment of the Kingdom of God ," says Program Director of Jubilee College of Music Christopher Chou.  "We're happy that we could offer this course this semester, and we hope that our students and curriculum can continue to progress at the pace of technology."
