JCM Greets Christmas Season with Concert

December 02, 2006

With the winter season fast approaching, students at the Jubilee College of Music are busy preparing for what will be the school's first Christmas Concert.

The concert, titled "O Come, Let Us Sing," will feature several choral pieces and scripture readings. It is the capstone of this semester's vocal ensemble course, instructed by the Dean of Jubilee College of Music, Dr. Merril Smoak.

The event marks the first self-produced performance from Jubilee College of Music. It is also the first JCM performance to integrate students from other colleges.

"We experienced a groundbreaking semester under Dr. Smoak's leadership," said Emily Ko, teaching assistant for the course. "This course was an amazing blend of singing lessons, theory, worship and fellowship. It was a great contribution to a beautiful Olivet University tradition."

Smoak is slated to teach the vocal ensemble course again in Spring 2007, with hopes for an even larger and more diverse body of singers.

"The curriculum at Olivet University is particularly rigorous one," commented JCM Director Christopher Chou. "We're thankful to Dr. Smoak and his contributions to the school, and we hope to continue to foster this kind of development in the College with each passing semester."
