OCAD: 7th-13th Christian Art History

April 01, 2005

Professor Joan Carter, who is also the dean of the OU Art & Design College, taught the course on "Christian Art History". The 2-hour class covered Byzantine and Western Christian Art, and students learned to analyze the art form and patterns in the art pieces, which were viewed through a projector.

"Later years when I brought my field of experience of history to theology, I discovered there was a lot more happening in those periods than I realized before. There is a deep theological statement in what happens in the arts." Said Dr. Carter during her introduction to the class.

The course began covering 7th-13th century art and the importance of iconography highlighting biblical narrative. Students viewed numerous slides of icons as Dr. Carter analyzed the narration of each piece through the basics of light, color, and perspective.

"It is exciting to have the opportunity to learn and develop our knowledge in the field of art. Everything will contribute to building ourselves into better workers who reveal the glory of God," reflected a student.
