OSAD Held Illuminated Manuscripts Workshop for Students

April 10, 2023

Olivet School of Art and Design (OSAD) recently held a workshop on illuminated manuscripts as part of the History of Graphic Design course. The workshop aimed to provide students with a hands-on experience of the typography and design techniques used in earlier times.

During the workshop, students learned about the process of hand-printing Psalter letters, which involved tracing pre-existing designs and copying them onto another piece of paper. Despite the simplicity of the task, students found it challenging and time-consuming.

One student shared, "This workshop made me realize how much hard work and effort went into creating books like the Psalter. It also helped me appreciate the crucial role that printing played in the development of history, allowing us to have access to Bibles today."

Through this exercise, students gained a deeper understanding of the dedication required to create hand-crafted designs and how they contributed to the value of books in the late middle ages. Overall, the illuminated manuscripts workshop was a valuable learning experience for the students, providing them with insight into the history and art of typography and design.
